A host of opera favorites will join Tony winner John Lithgow—who opens on Broadway January 11 in his solo show Stories by Heart—in the Carnegie Hall presentation of Leonard Bernstein’s Candide April 18 in the Stern Auditorium/Perelman Stage.
Paul Appleby will star in the title role with Erin Morley (who recently appeared in Les Contes d’Hoffmann at the Met this season) as Cunegonde, Patricia Racette as the Old Lady, William Burden as Governor, and Lithgow as Voltaire/Dr. Pangloss. Remaining cast members will be announced at a later date.
Gary Griffin (Honeymoon in Vegas, The Color Purple) directs the 7 PM concert production with choreography by Joshua Bergasse (On the Town, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory).
The creative team also includes costume designer Tracy Christensen, lighting designer Alan Adelman, projections designer Wendall K. Harrington, and sound designer Scott Lehrer with casting by Telsey + Company / Rachel Hoffman, CSA.
The production, presented with full orchestra, cast, and ensemble, is a benefit for the artistic and music education programs of Carnegie Hall. The concert is part of a global, two-year initiative to celebrate Bernstein during his centenary.
Bernstein’s 1956 musical Candide, based on Voltaire’s satirical tale, serves as the culminating performance of Carnegie Hall’s celebration of the 100th anniversary of the legendary composer and conductor’s birth.
A limited number of concert-only tickets, priced $47–$155, are currently available at the Carnegie Hall Box Office, by calling CarnegieCharge at (212) 247-7800, or online at CarnegieHall.org/Candide. Benefit tickets are available by calling Carnegie Hall’s Special Events office at (212) 903-9679.
